Obituary

Obituary for Ruth Anne McLean (Laurentz)

Ruth Anne McLean, 86, of Franklin Lakes, N.J., is now at rest with the Lord. She is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, James Hammond McLean (Jim). Ruth Anne is also survived by her two sons, Stephen and Douglas McLean; three grandchildren, Stephen McLean, Jr., Jaclyn Bassett, and Holly McLean; and seven great grandchildren, Evelyn, John, Cate, and Julie McLean, and Declan, Carolina and Mackenzie Bassett. Ruth Anne is also survived by her daughter-in-law Aimee McLean, granddaughter-in-law, Sarah McLean, and grandson-in-law Timothy Bassett. Ruth Anne made her family the center of her life. Her passing to eternal glory occurred peacefully at her home holding Jim’s hand as she had for seven decades surrounded by the love of Doug, Aimee and Steve and devoted friends Natia and Guranda.

Ruth Anne and her twin, the recently late Mary Ellen Brennan, were born in Brooklyn in 1933 to Harriet and Jack Laurentz. The family moved to Yonkers shortly thereafter where she was raised, graduating from Roosevelt High School. After graduating from Katharine Gibbs College in 1953 and while working in Manhattan, Ruth Anne met Jim at the Pondfield House restaurant in Bronxville, New York. It was love at first sight, and within six months, they became engaged. The couple eloped shortly before Jim began his tour of military service with the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Thule, Greenland.

Ruth Anne worked as an administrative assistant within several organizations including Glamourine, the University of Maryland and the Central Intelligence Agency, which she credited for her uncanny ability to sniff out anyone’s secrets, which came in handy when raising her two sons.

Ruth Anne and Jim raised their family in Yonkers, NY and Levittown, PA. Ruth Anne was a supportive presence in the lives and community of her children and helped support all their activities from Boy Scouts to Little League and the PTA. After her sons were older, she resumed her professional career at the Yonkers Department of Education.

Ruth Anne and Jim moved to Midland Park and then Franklin Lakes to be a part of their grandchildren’s lives. Known lovingly as “G and G” by their grandkids, they never missed a soccer game, dance recital, play, or even a pick up or drop off. Ruth Anne continued to work supporting the Sixth Reformed Church in North Haledon.

Jim and Ruth Anne were devoted members of Hawthorne Gospel Church. She loved Christ and shared her faith, passing it on to all whom she knew. Her legacy is in the devotion to Christ expressed by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her four rules for living were: rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks and do not quench the Spirit. Unquenchable, Joyful, Prayerful, Grateful, Ruth Anne is desperately missed and forever adoringly loved.

The family will receive family and friends on Thursday from 6:00-9:00 PM at Vander Plaat-Vermeulen Memorial Home, 530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes.
Funeral Services on Friday at 11:00 AM at Grace United Methodist Church, 555 Russell Ave, Wyckoff, NJ. Interment at Christ the King Cemetery, Franklin Lakes.
