Obituary for Margaret Mary ""Marge"" Stubeck (Scullion)

STUBECK, Margaret “Marge” (Scullion), daughter of the late William and Catherine (Fendt) Scullion, died peacefully on November 9, 2021 after a long illness. Formerly of Lincoln Park and Franklin Lakes, Marge moved to Chatham three years ago. Marge was an active member of Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Franklin Lakes for many years. A devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother, her family was her everything. Marge’s zest for life and positive outlook was evident to all who were blessed to know her. Emboldened by faith, strengthened by hope, and fierce in her love, Marge embodied these spiritual gifts throughout her life.

Born in Paterson, NJ on December 27, 1930, Marge’s early years were filled with great challenges and also great love. The Great Depression meant economic hardship for her family which was compounded when Marge’s dad died when she was just 7 years old, leaving Marge and her six siblings to be raised by their strong, hard-working, and devoted mother. Despite the difficult circumstances, Marge’s mom ensured she and her siblings felt safe and loved and the family formed a close bond which remained until each of their deaths. Always focused on the positive, Marge only spoke of good times and fun when talking of her growing up years. Her positive outlook continued throughout her life as she faced each day with a spirit of optimism and a “never quit” attitude.

After graduating from St. Joseph’s High School in Paterson, Marge worked as a secretary for a number of years before meeting the love of her life, Michael Stubeck. Once married, Mike and Marge settled in Franklin Lakes where Marge was fully engaged in raising their four children. She drove them to activities, attended all of their sporting events, cheered them on, and supported them with love and devotion. Sadly, Marge was predeceased by her husband in 1983. A few years later, however, the grandchildren started to arrive bringing new joy to her life and Marge quickly grew comfortable in her new role as grandmother. She played an active role in the lives of her eight grandchildren, often down on the floor playing whatever game was of current interest to them. She attended their sporting events, concerts, and plays. She beamed with pride at their graduations, she reveled in each of their successes. Through it all, her steadfast love and devotion provided an unending wellspring of support to these amazing young people whose lives are enriched beyond measure because of her presence in their lives.

Marge cherished her family. Her greatest pride was her family. She will be dearly missed. Her legacy of faith, hope, and love will live on in each of those who loved her and were loved by her including her children, Michael Stubeck of St. Croix, Joanne Blake and her husband, Sam, of Tucson, AZ, and Jim Stubeck and his wife, Carole, of Chatham, NJ. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter Eileen Tilli. Called “Grandma” by Mike Stubeck and Annie Fay and her husband, Greg, “Grandma Marge” by Sam Blake and Christopher Blake, and “Amma” by Tony Tilli, and Joseph, Matthew, and Sarah Stubeck, she will live on through them. She also leaves behind her brother, William Scullion and his wife, Patsy of Florida, a host of beloved nieces and nephews, lifelong best friend Irene Catania, in-laws who became beloved family, and cherished friends she gathered along the way.

The Stubeck family will receive family and friends at the Vander Plaat – Vermeulen Memorial Home, 530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes, NJ on Sunday, November 14, 2021, from 2 – 5 PM. Funeral service will be held on Monday, November 15 at 10:00 am at St. Elizabeth’s RC Church, 700 Wyckoff Avenue, Wyckoff. Interment to follow at Christ the King Cemetery in Franklin Lakes.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marge’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
