Obituary for Joseph Puzio Jr.

Joseph F. Puzio, Jr. 75, on February 10, 2022 of North Haledon, NJ. Born in Paterson, Joe had lived in Park Ridge prior to moving to North Haledon 21 years ago. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Vietnam War. Prior to his retirement in 2019 he was a Sr. Vice President for HDR Engineering in Mahwah and continued to serve as a consultant after his retirement. Joe was a member of The Most Blessed Sacrament Church of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey.

Joe has been involved in the Society of American Military Engineers since 2002. He has been very active in the New York City Post having served several 3-year terms as an Elected Director and served on the Committee of the Annual Scholarship Fund Dinner Dance Gala for many years and was an active member of the Programs Committee for NYC Post dinner meetings. Joe recently served as the NYC Post Centennial Celebration Committee Chair for the NYC Post. Joe distinguished himself by his unwavering and faithful dedication to deploying the objectives of the NYC Post and the Society’s Strategic Plan and his leadership within the organization to achieve critical goals. Joe represented HDR at the Annual National Conference, the National Annual Small Business event, and many other functions. He ensured HDR’s annual corporate sponsorship and support of the joint NYC/NJ Post Scholarship Golf Fundraiser and arranged for HDR to participate significantly in the annual NYC Post Scholarship fundraiser gala benefitting this important mission. In 2019, HDR was honored at the NYC Post Scholarship fundraiser gala as the Designer of the Year. From 2002 – 2012, Joe led the corporate effort to sponsor and support key events and programs held by NJ Post (e.g., FedConOpps, RegConOpps, AT/FP) and the Support the Troops mission held concurrently with those activities. Joe personally encouraged other HDR offices to join S.A.M.E. and recruited small business subcontractors to join as Sustaining Member firms or individuals. Professionally, Joe has acted as a mentor to young members and to small business owners, providing insight and guidance. He also actively sought opportunities for small businesses and referred them to foster growth and development of relationships. In January 2020, Joe was awarded the SAME Regional Vice President’s Medal which recognizes sustained and outstanding contributions in the North Atlantic Region for his demonstrated commitment, leadership and sustained exemplary service to the Society, the NYC Post and the Post’s Scholarship Foundation The RVP Medal is conferred to only a few individuals each year.

Joe was the devoted husband of Phyllis (Dabrowski) Puzio for 52 years. Beloved father of Matthew Puzio of Pennsylvania.

Friends and family will visit at the Vander Plaat Vermeulen Memorial Home, 530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes, Tuesday February 15, 2022, prior to the funeral mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help RC Church, Oakland, Tuesday 10:00AM. Interment to follow at Christ the King Cemetery Franklin Lakes, NJ.
