HOOGERHYDE, John Jr. “Bud” – 91, of North Haledon went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 5, 2018.
Born in Prospect Park on April 7, 1927 to John Hoogerhyde, Sr. and Adrianna (nee Sweetman) Hoogerhyde, he has lived in North Haledon since 1958. Bud was married for over 65 years to his childhood sweetheart, the late Sarah “Sally” (nee Ver Hoeve) Hoogerhyde. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during WW II in Guam and was a self-employed milkman. John was a member of the Preakness Valley United Reformed Church in Wayne, and formerly a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Haledon.

Bud began working with his father on the family milk truck at age 8, and continued after the War with his brother Garry until retiring from the milk business in 1983. He then began working full time in the window washing business that he had started years earlier. He loved getting to know his customers, some of whom became lifelong friends. He retired from the window business last November at the age of 90.

Faith in God was the foundation of Bud’s life. He worked incredibly hard throughout his life, an ethic that he passed on to his children and grandchildren. With the help of his father and his uncles, and while working full time on his milk route in the late 1950s, he built the house in North Haledon where he and Sally lived for the rest of their lives. He enjoyed gardening until the day that he died, and was well known for his delicious tomatoes. After not taking a vacation for the first 25 years of their marriage, Bud and Sally went on many cruises to Bermuda and other parts of the world.

In addition to being a beloved husband, he was also a devoted father to Carol Hicks and her husband Scott of Underhill Center, VT; Linda Thomas and her husband William of Wyckoff; Robert Hoogerhyde and his wife Bonnie of North Haledon; and John Hoogerhyde and his wife Michelle, also of North Haledon. He was the loving grandfather of Sarah Thonus and her husband Len of Harwich, MA; Taylor Thomas and his wife Larissa of Wyckoff; Jonathan Hicks and his wife Ellie of Granville, OH; Evan Hicks and his wife Nikki of Fairfax, VT; and John James Hoogerhyde and Adrianna Hoogerhyde of North Haledon. He was also the great-grandfather of Chase, Taylor, Lindsey, and William Thonus; Henry, Sophia, Edward, and Robert Hicks; Lawrence and Emma Thomas; and an eleventh great grandchild expected by Evan and Nikki in 2019. He was the dear brother of the late Garrett Hoogerhyde, and is survived by Garry’s wife Dolly and their sons, Garry and Randy. Bud often commented on how God had also blessed him with compassionate, generous neighbors.

The family will receive family and friends on Wednesday, August 8th from 4-7 PM at Vander Plaat-Vermeulen Memorial Home, 530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes. Funeral Services are scheduled for Thursday 10:30 AM at the funeral home. Interment will be at Laurel Grove Memorial Park, Totowa.
