Obituary for Jessie Hamersma
HAMERSMA, Jessie – 88, of Hawthorne passed into the arms of Jesus peacefully on August 16, 2021.
Beloved daughter of the late Charles and Jennie (nee Lont) Hamersma.
Loving sister of William Hamersma of Waldwick, and the late John Hamersma, Martha Hamersma, and Claire Chaparian.
She is also survived by 5 nieces, 3 great-nieces and 7 great-nephews, as well as her life-long friend Lena Tamboer whom she shared her love of Borzoi, Dachshund, and world travels.
Born in Glen Rock, Jessie lived in Midland Park before moving to Hawthorne in 1998. She was an active member of Faith Community Christian Reformed Church in Wyckoff. Prior to her retirement she was a secretary with multiple pharmaceutical companies and worked at Herold’s Farm in Glen Rock.
Even though she never had children of her own, Jessie helped raise her nieces, great-nieces and great-nephews, whom she adored. Many summers were spent at the Jersey Shore with the family. Jessie loved to knit and was very giving of her time, volunteering at her church and the Christian Health Care Center. Jessie also devoted much of her life to her true passion, her love of dogs. She was an active member and treasurer of the Borzoi Club of America as well as the Borzoi Club of Greater New York. She treated her dogs as her children, especially her dachshund Sonny.
Friends and family are invited to gather at the entrance of Fair Lawn Memorial Cemetery on Saturday August 21, at 9:45 am for a 10:00 am graveside service.
