Obituary for Jean Hackes (Rainey)

Jean M. Hackes, (97) Born December 24, 1922 in Motherwell, Scotland to Jessie and John McLaughlin. Jean was raised in Ontario, Canada where she attended and graduated the Hamilton General Hospital School of Nursing, Hamilton, Canada. Answering an advertisement in 1947 for nurses from Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York, she began her career.

Jean met and eventually married her husband Joseph “Joe” in June of 1952. Jean and Joe began their married life in the Allwood Apartments in Clifton. Jean was an only child, and fondly reflected on life as part of the Hackes family. While in Clifton, they built their home in Packanack Lake, Wayne. Upon moving to their new home, she left nursing to raise their three children and become a U.S. citizen. Jean returned to the nursing field at the Chilton Hospital in 1968 and retired in 1993. She spent her retirement years, enjoying her grandchildren, attending games with Joe, perfecting her shortbread and knitting a variety of hats, gloves and Christmas stockings. She loved her grandchildren and took much pride in sharing the photos and artwork received from her grandchildren and great grandchildren over the years.

Jean was predeceased by her husband of 56 years in 2008. She is survived by David and Nancy Hackes of Sherrills Ford, NC, Diane Hackes of Lincoln Park, NJ, Daniel and Karen Hackes of Wayne, NJ, Grandchildren: Holly and Thomas Simpson, Denver, N.C, Ariana & David Fessler, Wayne, NJ; Maxwell Hackes, NYC, NY; Tyler Hackes, Wayne, NJ, Great Granddaughters: Mallory and Piper Simpson, Denver, NC
