Obituary for Janet A. VerDuin (Sweetman)

Janet Arlene Ver Duin passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her children on September 12, 2021, at the age of 62 after a long battle with leukemia.

Janet, or Jan as she was referred to by family, friends and colleagues, was born on June 14, 1959, in Sussex, New Jersey, the daughter of Jennie and Tunis Sweetman.

Jan was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, friend and colleague to everyone she met.
Jan dedicated her life to her family but also by working as a registered nurse in labor and delivery departments for thirty-nine years. Jan was selfless, loving, nurturing, forgiving and strong, going above and beyond to make sure her family had everything and more to feel loved and supported. She would go out of her way to lend a helping hand or ear to anyone who needed it. Her positivity, compassion, love and support will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

Jan was united in marriage on August 15, 1979, to Leonard Van Grouw. Together they adopted three children: Crystal, Danielle and Tory. Leonard passed away on July 28, 1992, after a short battle with leukemia.

Jan remarried on May 20, 1994, to Daryl Ver Duin in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Jan is survived by her husband, Daryl; her mother Jennie Sweetman; nine children: Crystal and her husband Wesley Derksen, Danielle, Tory, Samuel, Morgan, Thomas, Rachelle, Hannah and Logan. Her three grandchildren: Addyson VerDuin, Mylan and Maya Derksen; and her siblings; Judy Sweetman, Tunis and his wife Sharon, Jenny and her husband Gregory Van Grow Sr., Daniel and his wife Patricia and Doug and his wife Amy.

The Ver Duin family would like to thank the staff at Cox South Medical Center in Springfield Missouri and the staff at the Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis Missouri for their professionalism, dedication and compassion as well as to her friends and co-workers at Cox South Medical Center for their love, support and compassion throughout her time there.

The Ver Duin family would also like to thank Tunis Sweetman for his time, dedication and donation of stem cells that gave the Ver Duin family eight more months with their beloved mother, grandmother, daughter and sister.

The family will receive family and friends at the Vander Plaat – Vermeulen Memorial Home 530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes, NJ on Monday, September 20, 2021 from 4-7 PM. A funeral service will be held at the Ebenezer Netherlands Reformed Church 875 Ewing Ave. Franklin Lakes on Tuesday 10:00 AM followed by an interment at Fair Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Fair Lawn NJ
