Obituary for Harold Marino

Harold P. Marino, born and raised in Paterson, NJ, had a difficult start to life growing up with limited means during the Great Depression and experiencing the loss of a brother when he was seven years old. He graduated from Eastside Highschool and was drafted into the army soon after. He was sent to Fort Dix for training before heading to Europe to serve in WWII in Army Division 100. He participated in the liberation of France at the end of the war, a memory that he would share with great emotion and pride.
When the war was over in 1945, he considered himself fortunate to attend Catholic University in Washington DC on the GI Bill, an achievement that he never took for granted. Upon graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he began working at Walter Kitty and soon after, met the woman who would become his lifelong partner. He held numerous engineering positions through the years, putting his degree and sharp mind to use.
Fortuna and Harold married in June of 1952 and moved to Prospect Park NJ where they would begin their family before eventually moving to North Haledon NJ.
In 1967, Harold decided to go off on his own and open a series of coin-operated laundromats which he eventually sold with the exception of the Village Valet in Ridgewood NJ where he and his wife worked side by side for 25 years until he retired.
Harold passed away peacefully at the remarkable age of 99 on Thursday, November 19, 2020, just as he always wished, at home with his devoted wife by his side.
Harold was born on October 8th, 1921 to Michelina (nee Segreto) and Angelo Marino. He is survived by his beloved wife, Fortuna, his son Mark Marino, daughter Kim Resetar and her husband Paul, daughter Joan Enger and her husband Kyle, and daughter in law Sheri Marino and predeceased son Robert Marino. He was especially fond of his 13 grandchildren, Carli Lampley and her husband Edward, Ben Marino and his wife Mia, Cole Marino, Jordan Marino, Rebekah Marino, Daniel Marino, Luke Marino, Lauren Resetar, Brittany Phillips and her husband Evan, Meredith Resetar, Andrew Enger, Grace Enger, Kate Enger and two great-grandchildren, Beau Lampley and Rio Phillips. He is also survived by his sister Olga Delaney, and his sister Adaline Roth and her husband Hal. He was loved and surrounded by many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
Harold and Fortuna were devout Roman Catholics and prayed every day together until the last. They were life-long parishioners of St. Paul’s church for 70+ years where he and his wife served numerous roles, including the Pre-Cana committee.
Harold was an avid reader and played Suduko and did a crossword puzzle a day. He enjoyed historical documentaries especially anything about WWII. He had an exceptional memory and was a great storyteller. He was a lifelong Yankees fan and he belonged to Unico, the Catholic War Vets and Aarp.
A service for all who are related to Marino family will be held from 9:00 – 9:45 am and visitation for all from 10:00 – 12:00 pm at Vander Plaat-Vermeulen Memorial Home, Franklin Lakes, NJ on Saturday, December 12th.
