Obituary for George Varoujan Jamgochian

Jamgochian, George Varoujan(Georgie), of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on 1/1/23. He was 23 years old. Born on February 25, 1999, “Twin B”, was the son of George and Kim Jamgochian (Dorian).

He is survived by his parents, his twin sister, Vanessa, and his older sister Marielle. He is also survived by his loving large family including his first cousins, Lauren (Andrew), Michael, Lily, Brian, Lia, Rose (Emma), Zoe, Lucine, Seta, Ani, and Taline and his nephew Bodhi. He was endearingly called Angel #7 by his Medzi (grandmother)
He was predeceased by his grandparents, Dr. Robert and Mariam (Papa and Medzi) Dorian, and George and Rose (Poppy and Nanni) Jamgochian, (all four were children of survivors of the Armenian Genocide) and his cherished Uncle Bob (Dr. Robert Setrag Dorian).

Georgie grew up in Franklin Lakes, NJ and attended Colonial Road School. He loved all his teachers, and loved to go back to volunteer to read books to the kindergartners and first graders. As an avid reader, he loved the Franklin Lakes Public Library and enjoyed the many activities the library provided. He participated in rec baseball and soccer and was a loyal Cub Scout and Boy Scout. He was the sports editor for his High School newspaper, fittingly called 'Drumbeats'. He was also a counselor at the Lorrimer Nature Sanctuary teaching campers about nature and fishing which he also loved. He also participated in many High School plays and musicals where he met some of his closest friends. His most memorable performance was as the UPS guy in 'Legally Blond' where he sang and danced.

Georgie was a Renaissance Man. He loved all forms of music and played drums, guitar and harmonica. He especially loved classic rock and R&B music from the 60s and 70s including the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Earth Wind & Fire and the Beach Boys (his favorite album was 'Pet Sounds'). He had a special relationship with his dad and attended many concerts, local and professional sporting events and car shows. They spent countless hours attending the NY Giants Football, NY Red Bulls Soccer and NJ Devils Ice Hockey games. They also loved going to Indian Trail Club together where they swam in the pool and lake, played tennis, paddle and threw frisbees and baseballs and had picnics in the Grove. They loved going to batting cages and hitting golf balls. Georgie also loved being with his grandparents and cousins in Bay Head and Broken Sound.

We cannot talk about Georgie without talking about baseball. His affinity for the sport started at a young age. By age 4, he knew every player on the Yankees dating back to the 20’s. His favorite team was the NY Yankees and he attended his first Yankees game at age 6. Later he became a bat boy at the NJ Jackals baseball team. In middle school he joined the FAMS baseball team as a player and in high school, he transitioned from player to assistant manager under the mentorship of Coach George Hill where he received a Varsity letter. He kept meticulous records of the stats for every game while also announcing the players as a PA. He also played softball at the Indian Trail Club, a place he loved dearly. He had a deep love for the sport that evolved into a passion and pursuit in public speaking, sports announcing and radio broadcasting. After high school, he became a student at Montclair State University. His major was Television and Digital Media with a Concentration in Sports Media and Journalism. He participated in many radio and announcing forums and his voice was a familiar one on campus where he met some of his closest college friends. He ran his own sports radio show at WMSC radio which he named, ’In Foul Territory’ a 3 hour weekly sports talk show. He also participated in the ‘The Morning Buzz’ where he gave daily sports updates and was an inaugural intern for the Red Hawks Sports Network. As an enthusiastic sports historian and aficionado, he called college baseball, basketball, football, soccer and girls softball games and returned to his beloved NJ Jackals as a broadcasting intern where he was an announcer and on field entertainer. Georgie’s college major in radio was undoubtedly ambitious and successful, however, his true passion for sports announcing, broadcasting and in the lives of players and coaches was highlighted by a series of interviews he conducted during the last 2 years of his life. Throughout his treatment, a number of famous athletes including Mariano Rivera, Bobby Valentine, Mark Messier, Boomer Esiason, Vinny Testaverde & Ray Rice called Georgie to give him words of encouragement and well wishes. However, Georgie would turn the conversation back to the player recounting specific famous plays that they made and got them speaking about themselves in a way that made them feel great. That was the kind of person Georgie was. He touched the lives of everyone he met. He was brave and brilliant and oh-so resilient. His humor and kindness touched the lives of everyone he met and he will always be remembered.

There will be a private service. The family wishes that donations in lieu of flowers will be made to the Memorial fund link below.
