Obituary for Frederic Postma

Frederic “Fred” Postma, 80, of Wanaque, NJ, passed away suddenly and went to his heavenly home on Saturday, October 24, 2020.

Fred was born in Passaic, NJ on June 21, 1940 to the late Frank and Jacoba Postma. He grew up in Wayne, NJ before moving to Wanaque in 1964. Fred was the eldest of his three siblings. Fred served honorably in the US Army. He started his own business called Postma Brothers with his brother David Postma and worked as a skilled stone mason until his retirement in 2004.

Fred committed his life to the Lord when he was 16 years old. Since that time, Fred loved to share the gospel with as many people as he could. He loved the study of theology and apologetics, and he wrote many papers on these topics. Spreading the gospel to family, friends and strangers was a joy to him. He taught adult Bible study classes both in and outside of church. His love for Jesus was apparent to all who knew him. Fred was a kind and soft spoken man who always had time to answer a question, help a friend, share the gospel, and pray with the needy or comfort the hurting. He was a rock to many. Fred was a natural handyman and could fix almost anything or do his best trying. Fred was a former member of Pompton Plains Reformed Bible Church where he served as a Deacon and Elder. In more recent years, he attended the Echo Lake Church on Macopin Road, West Milford, NJ.

Fred married his best friend Barbara VanderMaas on December 18, 1964. They met in Wayne, NJ as neighbors, growing up together across the street from one another. Once married, the couple moved to Wanaque, NJ and continued on to have four children. Fred was a loving father and dedicated his children to God and encouraged them to trust in their Savior.

Fred is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Donna Prevete, Karen Aikens, Rick Postma and his wife Kerry, Joy VanDerWeert and her husband Neal; his 11 grandchildren, Drew Hopper, Dean Hopper, Thomas Hilberts, Leanne Hilberts, Jennifer Hilberts, Jacob Hilberts, Brandon Postma, Nicole Postma, Sean VanDerWeert, Luke VanDerWeert and Grace VanDerWeert; 3 great-grandchildren, Aiden, Mylo and Mason; his siblings, David Postma and wife Margaret, Madelyn Higby and husband Phil, Paul Postma and wife Bonnie.

Family and friends may visit at the Vander Plaat – Vermeulen Memorial Home, 530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes, NJ on Thursday, 4-8PM. A funeral service and interment will be held privately at a later date.

Donations may be made in Fred’s memory to the Echo Lake Church, 1355 Macopin Road, West Milford, NJ 07480.
