Obituary for Dr Mitchel Bernstein

Mitchel Bernstein, MD, of Franklin Lakes, NJ passed away on July 8, 2022. He was 95 years old and enjoyed a long, healthy vibrant life. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, upon graduating Abraham Lincoln High School he enlisted in the US Navy, where he served as a Medic during WWII. After being discharged he earned a B.A. degree at University of Wisconsin and an M.D.at New York University. He built a successful general surgical practice in northern New Jersey where he was on the staff at Chilton Memorial Hospital, serving as both President of the Medical Staff and Chief of Surgery, and Valley Hospital. In 1980, he focused his practice exclusively on surgical oncology for diseases of the breast, and was one of the very first in the tri-state area to specialize in treating breast cancer. He had a lasting impression on his patients, who loved and trusted him dearly. Mitchel loved fly fishing, skiing, literature, especially poetry, and travel. He explored all seven continents, and especially enjoyed five decades of annual fishing trips with his son, from Labrador to Alaska, Bahamas to Patagonia. He had a passion for cooking and loved exploring different cuisines in his extensive travels. Beloved husband of Nada (née Friedman), who passed away in 2002, and Gail (née Winrow Carroll), devoted father to Jason and loving grandfather to AJ (Adam Justin) and Hailey.
