Obituary for David Matthew Zuidema

Click here for live service on Saturday at 10:00am

ZUIDEMA, David Matthew, 51, of North Haledon, went to be with his Lord on April 25, 2021. Born in Paterson on August 15, 1969 to William H. and Joyce Zuidema (nee Klapmust), he lived in North Haledon his whole life. David worked in government and mission-focused nonprofits throughout his career. When his children were born he became a stay-at-home dad and developed a freelance career in writing, digital design and technology support. David had a special gift of making people laugh and think deeply. He was an avid reader of the Bible. He had a passion to serve the church and the community, and taught Sunday School and Bible studies for many years. He loved his brothers in The New Canaan Society. David attended Emergence Church in Totowa and was a former member of Covenant Christian Reformed Church where he served as a Deacon and narrated many Live Nativity productions. Most important to him was serving his faithful Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and learning to live his faith authentically.

Cherished husband for 29 years to Yvonne (nee Vander Kooi)
Devoted father of John, Matthew and Sylvia.
Loving brother of William & Debra Zuidema, Sharon & Ben Spoelstra, and Kenneth Zuidema.
Loving son-in-law to Martina & Russel Hyma, and beloved brother in-law to Arlette & Albert Hepp, Sandra & Douglas Feldman, and Suzanne & Steve Van Ek.

Friends and family may visit the Zuidema family on Friday from 4:00-8:00 at the Vander Plaat-Vermeulen Memorial Home, 530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes, NJ. Memorial service on Saturday at 10:00am at the Living Word Reformed Church, 21 Pleasant View Drive, North Haledon, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in support of the children's education would be appreciated.

David always had a kind word and a gracious heart to all! I was privileged to share fellowship with him as a dear brother in Christ at NCS Bergen for 12 years and NCS Paterson for the past two years. He will be missed by all and his family will be entrusted to the Lord in prayer by the many who loved him!

I was heartbroken to learn of the passing of my almost-lifelong friend. Dave and I became friends in fourth grade (when he was REALLY into Star Wars) and never stopped. I couldn't begin to count all the memories I have of him in middle and high school: his intelligence and kindness and wit, constant companionship, nerdy passions, strong convictions, wicked sense of humor, adventures we shared, trouble we got into and out of. In adulthood, life and geography separated us, but I always looked forward to seeing him again when I visited NJ, and always found him a grownup (though, refreshingly, not too grown up) version of my teenaged friend. He was devoted to his beliefs and ideals, his lived faith, and his family and friends, and the world will be less interesting and fun without him.
Dave, you were a good kid, a good man, and a good friend. You left too soon, and I'll miss you more than I can say.

My heart aches for you all at the loss of Dave. I have such fond memories of him in high school, especially of acting in our school plays together. Such fun times. And though our contact over the last 30+ years was only through social media posts, Dave remained the fun, Christ-follower, thinker I knew him to be, and appreciated his voice in and about our world. I pray that in your sorrow you find comfort through the care of friends & family, through the legacy Dave leaves through every life he encountered, and most of all through the Presence & Hope of Jesus Christ holding you through this time of deep shadows.

Dave, your mind was a shining star for so many of us. You exemplified and honored sincerity in the midst of so much hypocrisy. You'll always be one of my role models.
